The next call was to Astrid, but the phone just rang. Perhaps the ringer was turned off, or she had been wheeled out for X-rays.

So Drake gave up and dialed Ginsburg at the Record.

“In Atlanta, I take it,” were his editor’s first words. “And alive. Maybe getting out of town was the right move after all.”

“I think so. And if you don’t mind, I’ll stay gone for a while.”

“How long a while?”

“A week, maybe two. You told me I should take some if I needed it. Turns out I do.”

“So this woman you went looking for, you found her?”

“Yeah. Definitely worth the trip.”

“What did she have to say?”

“She didn’t say a word. Neither did the guys she brought to the meeting with her.”

Ginsburg was silent for a bit. “Get on a plane and get back here.”

“No point. I’m in just as much danger in Boston. Maybe more. They know where I live and work back there. In Atlanta, I can keep a low profile.”

“Yeah, and go broke doing it.”

“I’ve got some money saved, enough to keep this up for a while.” It wasn’t a lie, really.

“What’s your next move?”

“Try to find some of the other people involved in this. I just need one who’s willing to talk. Then we’ve got a story and maybe some action from the feds. Homeland Security, I figure.”

“But only if you can find the right guy and get him to talk. Do you even know where to look? Got any names and addresses?”

“Email addresses is all. I’ve pinged them, so they can find me, but they might be too scared to reach out.”

“That, or they’re dead.” Ginsburg made an odd, disgruntled sound then. “Really, you want to keep this up?”

“They’ve tried for me twice, and they’ll keep on trying. They’re afraid I’ll somehow track them down. I figure my only option is to do just that.”

“You’ll have a great story when you get back,” Ginsburg mused. “If you work it right, the Record will pay for your vacation.”

“It might get expensive.”

“For you, especially. So watch your step. And bring me back something good.”
